LINE Lawsuit Update: Fifth Hearing

A short update on my lawsuit against LINE. There was a hearing on July 21, 2026.

LINE argued that the connections in their third brief fall under the grounds for suspension in the terms of service, and said they don’t plan to file anything more for now.

The court asked how I see their evidence, and through my lawyer I answered that I have no recollection of the abnormal connections they describe.

Now it is my turn to respond. We will file a rebuttal to their third brief and their evidence. The court said that, depending on what we argue there, it may then ask both sides how they want to proceed.

For the record, here is how I see it. If LINE’s account of these connections is right, the likeliest explanation is that someone else got into my account, which would make it a security failure on their side. Even then, I don’t see why I should be the one to lose my account over it. They could have blocked access from that address instead of freezing the whole thing. And while they point to the IP the connection came from, they say nothing about what was actually done through it, whether it was just a login or whether messages were sent, and I’ve seen no evidence that whoever it was broke the terms of service at all.

I’ll write again once our rebuttal is in.

LINE訴訟の短いアップデートです。2026年7月21日に期日がありました。

LINE側は、第3準備書面で挙げた接続が利用規約上の停止事由に該当すると主張し、現時点ではこれ以上の主張や証拠提出は予定していないと説明しました。

裁判所から、被告の証拠についてどう認識しているか確認があり、代理人を通じて、被告が主張する異常な接続には心当たりがない、と回答しました。

次はこちらの番です。被告の第3準備書面と証拠に対する反論書面を提出する予定です。裁判所からは、次回のこちらの反論の内容次第では、その後の進め方について双方の意見を確認する可能性があるという説明がありました。

私の見方も書いておきます。LINEが言うような接続が本当にあったのだとすれば、第三者が私のアカウントに入り込んだ、つまりLINE側のセキュリティ上の問題という可能性が高いように思います。仮にそうだとしても、その一度のことで私がアカウントを失う理由にはならないはずです。アカウント全体を止めるのではなく、その接続元からのアクセスを制限するといった対応もあったはずです。また、接続元のIPは示されていますが、その接続で実際に何が行われたのか、ログインだけなのかメッセージ送信までなされたのかは何も書かれておらず、その第三者が利用規約に違反する行為をしたという証拠も見当たりません。

反論書面を出したら、またその内容を書きます。

A short update on my lawsuit against LINE. LINE filed their third brief, on July 16, 2026, a day after the deadline. The hearing is tomorrow.

In May they would only say they had detected an “abnormal connection”. This time they name three: a connection using a protocol their official app doesn’t use, a connection from an IP address belonging to Amazon’s cloud service, and a connection from a client set to a language other than Japanese, where before that my connections came from Japanese-language clients on a phone.

They also say they keep a list of access conditions they treat as likely signs of abuse, detect those automatically, and suspend accounts when several of them show up together. So a machine froze the account on a combination of signals.

As I wrote previously, I have only ever used official LINE clients on my own devices.

The evidence provided is a copy of a screen from what appears to be LINE’s internal systems. It’s too poor to read in places, and most of the fields are blacked out. My lawyer has asked for a clean copy.

I’ll report again after the hearing.

LINE訴訟アップデート：被告の第3準備書面

LINE訴訟の短いアップデートです。2026年7月16日、LINE側から第3準備書面が提出期限の翌日に提出されました。期日は明日です。

5月の書面では「異常な接続」を検知したとしか書かれていませんでしたが、今回は3点が挙げられています。公式アプリでは使用しないプロトコルでの接続、AWS に割り当てられたIPアドレスからの接続、それに、それまでは日本語設定のスマートフォンのクライアントから接続していたのに、他言語設定のアプリ又はサービスを使用した接続が確認されたこと、という点です。

あわせて、不正利用に用いられる可能性が高いとみなすアクセス条件をリスト化して自動で検知していること、それらの条件が重複して検知された場合にアカウントを停止していることも説明されています。つまり、複数のシグナルの組み合わせで機械がアカウントを凍結したということです。

以前にも書いたとおり、私は自分の端末で公式クライアントしか使ったことがありません。

提出された証拠は、LINE社の内部システムと思われる画面の写しです。不鮮明で読み取れない箇所があり、項目のほとんどは黒塗りです。代理人からクリーン版を請求してもらっています。

LINE Lawsuit Update: Fourth Hearing

A short update on my lawsuit against LINE. There was a hearing on June 17, 2026.

The court laid out the two issues it sees in the case. First, whether LINE owes me the service at all. Second, whether the grounds LINE claims for suspending my account hold up.

On the first issue, both sides have said about all there is to say, so it now falls to the court to decide.

On the second, LINE has until the next hearing to decide whether to file a further rebuttal. If they do, depending on what they argue, I may have to appear in court in person to be questioned. If they don’t, and the court finds that LINE does owe me the service, then my request to have the account unfrozen has a good chance of being granted, and LINE’s breach of contract recognized along with it.

So for now it comes down to whether LINE files anything more, and what. I’ll post again when there’s news.

Update: The schedule is now set. LINE has until July 15, 2026 to file a brief, and the next hearing is on July 21, 2026. Once their brief is in, I’ll go through it and report back.

LINE訴訟アップデート：第4回期日

LINE訴訟の短いアップデートです。2026年6月17日に期日がありました。

裁判所から、本件の争点は2点だという整理が示されました。1点目は、LINE社にサービス提供義務があるかどうか。2点目は、LINE社が主張するアカウント停止の理由が認められるかどうかです。

1点目については、双方の主張がほぼ出尽くしたとされ、あとは裁判所が判断する段階に入りました。

2点目については、次回期日までに、被告側が当方の主張にさらに反論するかどうかを検討するとのことです。もし反論があれば、その内容次第では、私本人が裁判所に出向いて尋問を受ける可能性があります。反論がなく、裁判所が1点目について提供義務を認めれば、アカウント凍結の解除請求が認められる可能性が高くなり、あわせてLINE社の債務不履行も認められる方向になります。

今は、被告側がさらに反論するかどうか、するとしてどんな内容か、を待っている状況です。進展があればまた書きます。

追記： 日程が決まりました。被告側の書面提出期限は2026年7月15日、次回期日は2026年7月21日です。書面が提出されたら、内容を確認のうえまた報告します。

LINE Lawsuit Update: Our Rebuttal Brief

A short update on my lawsuit against LINE. My lawyers filed our rebuttal to LINE’s brief of May 2026.

We make two points.

First, LINE does owe me the service. LINE claims its terms merely allow users to use the service, without obligating LINE to provide anything. But the terms grant users the right to use content which, by the terms’ own definition, is only accessible through the service. A right to use something LINE can simply refuse to serve is no right at all. Granting the right has to mean actually providing access.

Second, there was no “abnormal connection.” By LINE’s own definition, an abnormal connection is one that doesn’t go through their official clients and that looks like an attack or abuse of the service. Neither applies to me. I only ever used official clients: the Android app from Google Play, LINE’s Chrome extension on my Linux laptop, and the official Windows app in a VirtualBox VM over three years ago. The Chrome extension was officially provided by LINE at the time — they have since discontinued it, so today there is no way to use LINE in a browser at all. The only other extension in my browser was an ad blocker. No scripts, no automation, no API calls, no VPN or proxy. And no sign my account was compromised either.

Maybe using Linux, a VM, or logging in from abroad (two short trips to France and China in the two years before the ban) looked “unusual” in their logs. But none of that is against the terms, and people travel.

The next hearing is on June 17, 2026.

LINE訴訟の短いアップデートです。2026年5月の被告準備書面に対する反論の準備書面を提出しました。

主張は2点です。

1点目は、LINE社にサービス提供義務があること。LINE社は、利用規約は利用を「許諾」するだけで、サービスの提供を義務付けるものではないと主張しています。しかし規約上、「コンテンツ」はサービスを通じてのみアクセスできるものと定義され、その利用権がユーザーに付与されています。サービスが提供されなければ、この利用権は空論化してしまいます。利用権を付与する以上、実際にアクセスできる状態を提供する義務があるはずです。

2点目は、「異常な接続」など存在しないこと。LINE社自身の定義によれば、「異常な接続」とは公式の手段によらない接続であって、攻撃や不正操作を目的とするものを指します。私はどちらにも当てはまりません。使っていたのは、Google Playから入れたAndroid公式アプリ、Linuxノートパソコン上のChrome拡張機能版LINE、そして3年以上前にVirtualBox上のWindowsで使っていた公式アプリだけです。なお、Chrome拡張機能版LINEは当時LINE社が公式に提供していたものですが、現在は提供終了しており、今ではブラウザからLINEを使う方法自体がありません。LINE以外に入れていた拡張機能は広告ブロッカーだけ。スクリプトも自動化ツールもAPI呼び出しもVPNもプロキシも使っていません。アカウントが乗っ取られた形跡もありません。

LinuxやVMを使っていたこと、海外からアクセスしたこと（利用停止前の2年間に、フランスと中国への短期旅行が1回ずつ）が、ログ上「普通と違う」ように見えた可能性はあります。しかし、どれも規約違反ではないし、ユーザーが旅行するのは当たり前のことです。

次回期日は2026年6月17日です。

LINE Lawsuit Update: Third Hearing

Another short update on my lawsuit against LINE. The third hearing took place on May 12, 2026.

The court confirmed the main points in dispute:

Whether LINE has an obligation to provide service to me.
Whether there was a legitimate reason for the account suspension.
Whether the alleged “abnormal connection” actually occurred.

LINE elaborated a bit on what they mean by “abnormal connection.” According to their argument, my account showed connections to the LINE app from external servers other than LINE’s official servers.

As someone with software engineering background, I find this wording confusing. LINE provides a client to its users, as the server side is LINE’s own infrastructure. So either LINE’s lawyer is using “server” loosely, or they are alleging that something other than a normal user device (e.g. an automated script running server-side) was accessing my account. We should be asking for clarification.

For the record, I have only ever used LINE through the official clients on my own devices. I have no idea what LINE detected.

The next step is to file a written rebuttal. No date has been set yet for the next hearing.

LINE訴訟の短いアップデートです。2026年5月12日に第3回期日がありました。

裁判所において、本件の主な争点が以下のとおり整理されました。

LINE社が私に対して利用提供義務を負うか否か
利用停止措置に合理的理由が存在したか否か
「異常な接続」に関する事実の存否

被告側からは、「異常な接続」の具体例として、私のアカウントから、LINE社が提供する正規のサーバー以外の外部サーバーからLINEアプリへの接続が行われていた、との主張がありました。

ソフトウェアエンジニアリングのバックグラウンドを持つ者として、この表現は少々わかりにくいです。LINE社が利用者に提供しているのはクライアントであり、サーバー側はLINE社のインフラです。したがって、被告側の弁護士が「サーバー」という言葉をルーズな意味で使っているのか、それとも通常のユーザー端末以外（サーバー上で動く自動化スクリプト等）からのアクセスがあったと主張しているのか、釈明を求めるべきのではないか。

繰り返しになるが、私は自分の端末から公式LINEクライアント以外でLINEに接続したことはありません。LINE側が何を検知したのかは不明です。

今後は反論の準備書面を提出する予定です。次回期日は未定です。
